The concept of states in printmaking has a special resonance: it references the process of creating an image through different states until it reaches its definitive form. Or it can imply that a print image can exist in different states, in different permutations and combinations, a concept especially pertinent in a visual environment where images are often generated and delivered in a digital format. The term can also connote the states of mind evoked by the image, subjective content often intimately related to the printmaking process employed by the artist. Finally, we considered "states" to also reflect political states - in this case the subtle differences and influences between artists working in the United States and Canada, artistic bases of the printmakers in this exhibition.
